WADA Congratulates FINA, the First Sport to Implement the Revised Code

The World Anti-Doping Agency congratulates the International Swimming Federation (FINA) for being the first sport to officially implement the revised World Anti-Doping Code (Code) into the sport's rules. The Code, initially adopted in 2003 by the Sport Movement and governments of the world, is the document harmonizing anti-doping rules and policies in all sports and all countries.

Revisions to the Code, making it a stronger tool in the global fight against doping in sport, were unanimously endorsed by delegates at the Third World Conference on Doping in Sport and adopted by WADA’s Foundation Board on November 17, 2007. These new changes to the Code, to come into force on January 1, 2009, are based on an extensive review and consultation with all stakeholders and take into account the practical experience that WADA and stakeholders have had since the Code's initial adoption in 2003. The result is a stronger Code that is both firm and fair and that serves as an effective and practical tool in the fight against doping in sport.

Code signatories must implement revisions to the Code by January 1, 2009.
