Rosa lends a hand at Outreach in Maputo

Marathon legend Rosa Mota is again lending her experience to the fight against doping in sport by working with WADA’s Outreach Program at the All Africa Games in Maputo, Mozambique.

Portugal’s former Olympic, world and European marathon champion has been helping to raise awareness with Africa’s finest sportsmen and women on anti-doping issues at the Outreach booth located in the athletes’ village.

“I am here because I believe in clean sport and because I believe that sport will be clean again one day,” said Mota, a former WADA Athlete Committee member.

“Reaching out directly to athletes and talking to them about anti-doping is very important and I support strongly the good work that WADA is doing. I have worked with WADA before and I get a lot of satisfaction from being able to help.”

In typical fashion, Mota has adopted the same dedication to Outreach as she did to her athletics career, and the respect with which is held amongst the athletes in Maputo is clear for all to see.

“Rosa is a champion through and through, and the athletes in Maputo recognize this and respect her for it,” said Stacy Spletzer, WADA’s Senior Manager, Athlete Relations & Communications.

“She is a force of nature and has such a wonderful personality that she attracts other athletes to the booth. Rosa has been crucial to our success.”

WADA’s Outreach booth is in operation for the duration of the All Africa Games, where it hopes to educate as many of the 5,000 athletes competing as possible.
