Rodney SwigelaarDirector, Africa Regional Office

Rodney Swigelaar has served as Director of WADA’s African Regional Office in South  Africa since 2003. A former provincial cricketer who also represented SA Universities in the sport, Rodney Swigelaar studied at the University of the Western Cape in Cape Town, in the Republic of South Africa and pursued a post-graduate degree in Applied Linguistics at the Vrije Universiteit, Amsterdam, in the Netherlands.

After completing his studies, he returned to his alma mater, the University of the Western Cape, as a lecturer. In 1996, he was appointed as a researcher for the Portfolio Committee on Sport and Recreation in the National Parliament of the Republic of South Africa.

Following the country’s second democratic general elections in 1999, he joined Sport and Recreation South Africa (a government department) and the Ministry of Sport and Recreation as Manager for Parliamentary Relations.

He represented South Africa at numerous WADA Foundation Board and Executive Committee Meetings and acted as Chairperson at one session of the IICGADS forum meetings in Moscow. He was also the coordinator of the IICGADS IV Meeting hosted by South Africa, served on the Secretariat of IICGADS, and occupied various coordinating roles in sport on behalf of the South African Government, including the Africa Cup of Nations staged in Mali in 2002.
