WADA encouraged by Swiss sanctions

WADA has noted with interest the recent cases of two Swiss athletes sanctioned after purchasing prohibited substances via the internet.

Cyclist Roger Nachbur was banned for two years by Swiss Olympic after ordering clenbuterol and EPO, while skier Reto Eigenmann received the same sanction for ordering the steroid trenbolone acetate and the anabolic agent clomifene.

“This is the first time Swiss athletes have been sanctioned for buying prohibited substances over the web and I applaud the efforts of the organizations that were involved,” said WADA President John Fahey.

“It is good example of the impact that law enforcement and public authorities - such as in this particular case, customs – can have when they share information with the anti-doping community.

“The relationship between anti-doping organizations and public authorities is becoming more and more important in the fight against doping in sport, and one that WADA continues to encourage.

“As well as being caught via traditional testing methods, athletes should know that we now also have the means to catch and sanction them when they purchase prohibited substances.”
