WTC reaches young athletes with ‘Ask Me Why I Am True’

The World Triathlon Corporation (WTC) used a ‘Dip-n-Dash’ event ahead of the recent Ironman World Championships to send a strong anti-doping message to the next generation of competitors.

The ‘Ask Me Why I Am True’ initiative encouraged young athletes at the event at Kailua-Kona Pier in Hawaii to ask the question so they could articulate their commitment to clean sport.

It is part of the WTC’s wider awareness campaign called ‘I Am True’, which was recently expanded to include more outreach programs aimed at professional and age-group tri-athletes.

WTC outreach programs were in operation at the Dip-N-Dash event and also at the World Championships a few days later, which was also staged at the Kailua-Kona Pier.

The WTC awareness initiatives are in partnership with World Anti-Doping Agency’s Say No! To Doping campaign, and are a crucial part of the Ironman governing body’s comprehensive anti-doping program launched in 2009.

“To be truly effective, an anti-doping program must incorporate a number of different elements,” said WADA Director General David Howman.

“Analysis must include a certain amount of blood collection, and it must be supported by education and awareness in order to reach out to athletes and make sure they are fully informed of the risks and dangers involved in doping.

“WADA applauds all anti-doping programs that include all of these elements.”

Last year’s Ironman World Champion Mirinda Carfrae supported the WTC’s efforts in Hawaii with an advertisement in LAVA Magazine in which she stated: “I AM TRUE because my motivation is to find and push my natural limits.”
