Athletes who might consider doping at the 2012 Olympics and Paralympics were warned in no uncertain terms at the launch of the ‘Win Clean: Say No To Doping’ campaign in London.
The initiative is a partnership between UK Anti-Doping (UKAD), the London Organizing Committee for the Olympic and Paralympic Games (LOCOG), the UK Department of Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport, and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
WADA’s Director of the European Regional Office and International Federations Relations, Frédéric Donzé, joined UK Minister for Sport and the Olympics Hugh Robertson, and LOCOG Director of Sport Debbie Jevans at the launch in Trafalgar Square.
“Every country and every athlete has a responsibility to help us prevent doping ahead of, and during next year’s Olympic and Paralympic Games,” said Mr. Robertson.
“In the UK we have adopted an intelligence-lead approach to tackling doping with sophisticated strategies, techniques and education programmes in place. Win Clean: Say No To Doping underlines that there is a zero tolerance approach in this country.”
Also present was Great Britain’s world marathon record holder Paula Radcliffe, who has been a vocal opponent of doping in sport for many years, along with Olympic and Paralympic hopefuls Rachel Morris, Samson Oni and Stephanie Twell.
“I welcome the fact it is being made clear that athletes visiting the UK are expected to meet the highest anti-doping standards,” said Ms. Radcliffe.
“UK athletes put so much into the process we deserve to know others are too. ‘Win Clean’ has always been my way and my mantra.
‘I really hope all athletes looking to compete in London in 2012 get behind Win Clean and we do have the fairest games ever.”
Win Clean: Say No To Doping will be rolled out at Olympic and Paralympic test events, where outreach stands and education sessions will be available to competing athletes and offering advice on all areas of anti-doping.
