Montréal International (MI) and WADA signed the formal agreement extending the presence of the international organization’s headquarters in Montreal, Canada, until December 31, 2021.
The document was signed by WADA’s President, the Honourable John Fahey, WADA’s Director General, David Howman, and MI’s President and CEO, André Gamache. The signature ceremony took place on May 9 in Montreal, in the presence of the Canadian Minister of State for Sport, the Honourable Gary Lunn, the Minister of State for the Economic Development Agency of Canada for the Regions of Québec, the Honourable Denis Lebel, and the Québec Minister of International Relations and Minister responsible for the Francophonie, Pierre Arcand.
“Montréal International is very pleased that its agreement with WADA has been extended for ten additional years. WADA’s decision to prolong its headquarters arrangements in Montreal is a reflection of the very strong value proposition of our city,” declared André Gamache. “In addition to the financial contributions that we manage on behalf of governmental partners, we are also committing our services to the WADA team, whose international staff represent a leading force in the science, legal, communication and technical aspects of anti-doping in sport.”
“WADA is pleased at this clear commitment of long-term support from the Governments of Canada and Québec, through their partnership in Montréal International,” said WADA’s President John Fahey. “Montreal has proved to be a successful headquarters location for us and we are happy to continue it. Our staff members enjoy Montreal’s unique characteristics as an international, multicultural and enjoyable place to work and to live.”
Montréal International led the preparation of the Montréal bid for the WADA headquarters in 2000-2001, with the collaboration of the Governments of Canada and Québec. Montreal put forward a very strong case for WADA headquarters, building on its reputation as an Olympic city as well as a preferred location for international organizations. WADA established and inaugurated its Montreal headquarters in early 2002. MI is mandated by its governmental partners to expand the presence of international organizations (IOs) in Montreal. Nearly 70 IOs have chosen Montreal to establish their secretariats, 25 of which were directly attracted by MI.
