Development of Code, EPO Report, Government Contributions to be Discussed at WADA Executive Meeting

Teleconference and press conference to be arranged for media

Montreal, May 20, 2003 – The Executive Committee of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) will meet on June 7 in Montreal for the first time since the acceptance of the World Anti-Doping Code in March.

The Committee will discuss a number of issues, notably the number of government contributions still to be paid to WADA this year and the budget implications of delayed payments. The implementation of the World Anti-Doping Code, which was accepted by delegates to the World Conference on Doping in Sport in Copenhagen in March, will also be discussed. Approximately 20 international sports organizations have already formally adopted the Code. (A list of the organizations can be found here).

A recent scientific report on the best method of detection of the substance EPO will also be presented. In addition, the Committee must adopt the International Standards for Laboratories and testing, which will be implemented January 1, 2004, and discuss the List of Prohibited Substances for 2004 and the Standards for Therapeutic Use Exemptions.

Thursday, May 29, 2003
At 10 a.m., Montreal time, Richard W. Pound, WADA’s president, will discuss with journalists via teleconference the major themes to be covered at the Executive Committee meeting. Journalists from North America who wish to participate in the teleconference should call, prior to 10 a.m., 1-888-575-8232. Journalists from other regions of the world must send to, prior to May 29 at 8 a.m., the phone number where they can be reached for the teleconference. WADA will initiate the call to journalists in regions other than North America.

Saturday, June 7, 2003
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. – Executive Committee meeting at WADA headquarters in Montreal.
This meeting is not open to the press.

5 p.m. – Press conference immediately following the Executive Committee meeting (hour subject to change). The press conference will take place at WADA headquarters in Montreal, Stock Exchange Tower, 800 Place Victoria.
