The Intelligence and Investigations Team plays a critical role in the fight against doping.
It is now fully recognized that, gathering insights, intelligence and information followed by a rigorous investigative approach is how we will catch more of those who attempt to undermine the values of fair play and sportsmanship.
In 2015, new provisions to the World Anti-Doping Code gave WADA the ability to initiate its own investigations. Both the Pound Independent Commission and the McLaren Independent Investigation are a result of these new powers and have lifted the veil on systemic doping activities. These groundbreaking investigations allowed WADA and the rest of the sports world to distinguish rumor from fact.
A dedicated team is committed to ensuring that WADA’s Intelligence and Investigations are conducted with the utmost professionalism and confidentiality.
MESSAGE FROM GÜNTER YOUNGER
I am thrilled to be leading WADA’s newly strengthened Intelligence and Investigations Team.
I am certainly not new to WADA, nor to the world of doping. Having gained broad experience in law enforcement, including with Europol and Interpol, in 2015 I was a member of the Agency’s three-person Independent Pound Commission.
Among other things, the Commission, which exposed widespread doping in Russian athletics, served to reinforce my belief that Intelligence and Investigations have a vital role to play in maximizing the global anti-doping program and cleaning up sport.
At the end of the day, we want to get to the truth.
My team operates independently within WADA to ensure confidentiality. We are a team of professionals – all with years of experience in law enforcement, investigation and sport. Part of our role is to investigate allegations raised by informants and whistleblowers.
I know that coming forward is not a decision that people come to lightly. I would like to assure you that, should you choose to Speak Up!, you will be listened to and you have our respect.
